THE VERTICAL FOREST
The ‘Vertical Forest’ is part of Porta Nuova, the largest urban renewal project in Europe, carried out ahead of Milan Expo 2015.
The complex includes two residential towers of 110 meters (Tower E, 27-storey) and 76 meters (Tower D, 18-storey) respectively, designed by the famous architects Stefano Boeri, Gianandrea Barreca and Giovanni La Varra. The buildings offer ample views of Via Confalonieri and Via de Castillia.
The surroudings are home to more than 1,000 trees, shrubs and flowers, offering a bold experiment of environmental sustainability and pollution reduction. Some of the technologies used: exploitation of renewable energy sources (such as geothermal heating system), 500 sq.mt photovoltaic panels, thermal insulation, environmentally friendly building materials, rainwater collection for irrigation purposes.
The huge green area of Porta Nuova (about 160,000 sq.mt) comprises the Vertical Forest, Porta Nuova gardens, the Gardens ‘De Castillia dell’Isola’, Gae Aulenti square – designed by the Argentinian architect Cesar Pelli – the walking-cycling routes of Garibaldi and those between Via Melchiorre Gioia and the Varesine district.
– Surveillance system in the lobby (CCTV)
– Plate reading system in the garage
– Reception (24 hours) and a foyer with large windows offering views of Via de Castillia park
19/11/2014: the Vertical Forest wins the International High-rise Award, a biennial international competition rewarding the most beautiful and innovative skyscraper in the world. The prize is given by the Frankfurt Museum of Architecture.

Google has also chosen the area for its Italian offices (at the skyscraper Zigghurat or ‘Pyramid’, designed by William McDonough).
